For learners who benefit from foundational reading support, instruction focuses on building a strong literacy base through explicit, structured instruction in phonological awareness, decoding, encoding (spelling), fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. Skills are taught systematically and at a pace that supports confidence, accuracy, and long-term growth.
For learners with strong word recognition skills who benefit from deeper language comprehension support, instruction focuses on strengthening vocabulary, reading fluency, and comprehension. Sessions emphasize making meaning from text through explicit instruction in comprehension strategies, including recalling key details, organizing information, making connections, inferring and predicting, and analyzing text to support understanding and academic success.

The Literacy Lift helps disabled children and young adults master literacy skills to increase their success in school, and fully participate in their communities.
I am Taylor Atwater, founder of The Literacy Lift! After six years of teaching special education in the public school setting, I set out to provide literacy intervention services that prioritize time, student growth, and acquisition of literacy skills. Therefore, I help individuals acquire literacy skills to participate in their education, and life. I use a strengths-based, whole-child approach that blends the individual's unique interests and sensory-informed strategies with literacy routines. My goal is to empower literate individuals who fully participate in the world around them. I provide direct communication and supportive guidance through every step of the literacy journey. I believe that literacy is a human right, and every individual has the right to read. I am committed to diversity, inclusion, equity, and accessibility for all people. I help children and young adults who need support with language, literacy, and regulation.
I received my B.A. in English, and my Master of Arts in Teaching in special education and elementary education from The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Furthermore, during my time in the public school setting, I received training in several Orton - Gillingham based reading programs, as well as professional development in the Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling (LETRS), and Reading Research to Classroom Practice (RRtCP).
The Literacy Lift is a welcoming space for all people.
Multi-sensory teaching strategies, regulating practices, and stims are used and encouraged here.
